Laser Cutting

Laser cutting

At Iron Forge Creations (IFC) in Mahim, Mumbai, CNC fiber laser cutting is the initial step in the metal fabrication pipeline. It transforms raw metal sheets into precise blanks, intricate architectural panels (jalis), and components for custom furniture without mechanical force or tool wear.

Technical Workflow & CNC Execution

The laser cutting operation follows a strictly digital-to-machine workflow to optimize material usage and maintain exact tolerances:

  1. CAD/Vector Layout ➔ 2. CAM Nesting ➔ 3. Fiber Laser Setup ➔ 4. Gas-Assisted Cutting ➔ 5. Quality Inspection
  1. Digital File Preparation: Design layouts and geometric patterns are prepared as 2D vector files (DXF/DWG/AI) generated from software like CorelDRAW or CAD systems.
  2. CAM Nesting & Material Optimization: Advanced nesting algorithms arrange multiple parts onto a single standard sheet size to minimize kerf waste and reduce raw material scrap.
  3. Fiber Laser Calibration: The sheet is loaded onto the cutting bed. High-density fiber optics generate a focused laser beam that melts or vaporizes the target path with microscopic accuracy
  4. Assist Gas Processing:
    • Nitrogen Cutting: Used for stainless steel, brass, and aluminum to flush away molten metal while preventing surface oxidation. This leaves clean, bright, burr-free edges ready for immediate TIG welding or polishing.
    • Oxygen Cutting: Applied to carbon/mild steel sheets, utilizing an exothermic reaction to speed up cuts through thicker gauges.
  5. Deburring & Verification: Cut profiles are removed from the skeleton frame, checked against digital drawings for dimensional accuracy, and sent directly to press brake bending, welding, or chemical processing.

Primary Advantages at IFC

  • Zero Mechanical Distortion: Because laser cutting is a non-contact thermal process, thin or delicate sheet metal panels cut without bending, cupping, or edge warping.
  • Intricate Geometries: Capable of cutting fine radius corners, micro-perforations, and complex geometric pattern lines that are impossible to execute with punch presses or mechanical shearing.
  • Seamless Downstream Integration: Precise laser edge alignment directly accelerates subsequent shop processes like press-brake V-bending, tight TIG weld joints, and flush brass-to-wood inlay fittings.
