Metal Bending

Metal Bending

At Iron Forge Creations (IFC) in Mahim, Mumbai, metal bending serves as a core fabrication technique. It bridges raw architectural metal design and structural engineering, transforming flat sheet metal, tubing, and solid profiles into precise architectural elements, custom furniture frameworks, and specialized metal sculptures.

Technical Bending Capabilities & Techniques

The workshop utilizes both cold-forming machinery and skilled artisan methods to manipulate various alloys including mild steel, stainless steel, brass, copper, and aluminum:

  1. Press Brake & V-Bending (Sheet Metal):
    • Air Bending & Bottoming: Precision press brake tooling forces sheet metal into V-shaped dies to achieve accurate angular bends (acute, 90°, or obtuse) with minimal material distortion.
    • Springback Compensation: Specialized operators factor in material elasticity and yield strength over-bending slightly so the metal relaxes into exact design angles.
  2. Section & Profile Rolling:
    • Used for forming continuous curves, cylinders, and sweeping arcs in box sections, angle irons, and flat bars.
    • Crucial for curved architectural panels, custom circular bases, and structural rings.
  3. Mandrel & Hydraulic Tube/Pipe Bending:
    • Maintains internal diameter and structural integrity of hollow pipes without crimping or buckling.
    • Applied extensively in bespoke furniture frames (legs, daybed bases, tripod stands) and decorative metal railings.
  4. Craft Artisan Bending & Hot Forming:
    • For intricate 3D metal sculptures, organic motifs, or heavy structural sections, localized heat treatment is combined with manual forming techniques.

Workflow & Precision Process

  1. CAD & Vector Prep ➔ 2. Material Cutting ➔ 3. Tooling Setup ➔ 4. Precision Bending ➔ 5. Quality & Alignment Check
  • Vector Integration: Geometric layouts and bend lines are generated from technical vector files (such as CorelDRAW or CAD models) to calculate accurate bend allowances and K-factors before forming.
  • Pre-Bending Prep: Raw metal is cut using laser or shearing processes to exact flattened dimensions.
  • Setup & Gauge Alignment: Back gauges and die setups ensure tight tolerances across small batch custom pieces or multi-unit production runs.
  • Post-Forming Inspection: Formed pieces are checked against master templates for angular accuracy, flat alignment, and seam squareness before proceeding to welding, buffing, or surface finishing.
